Alpaca Yarn
About Alpaca Yarn
Alpaca fibre comes from the fleece of the alpaca, a South American camelid native to the high Andean plateau. It has been prized for thousands of years for qualities that few natural fibres can match: it is softer than most wool, warmer than sheep's wool by weight, naturally hypoallergenic, and free from the lanolin that can irritate sensitive skin. For knitters and crocheters who find standard wool scratchy or uncomfortable, alpaca is often the answer.
Alpaca yarn falls into two main types. Huacaya alpaca — the most widely available — has a fluffy, crimped texture that gives yarn a soft, airy handle with a subtle halo. Suri alpaca is rarer, with long, silky locks that produce a yarn with incredible lustre and drape, often used in finer weight projects. Both types are warmer than wool by weight, making alpaca an outstanding choice for winter knitting.
Alpaca vs Wool: What's the Difference?
The most common question we hear is how alpaca compares to merino wool. Both are natural, premium fibres — but they behave quite differently in the hand and on the needles. Merino has natural elasticity and memory, which makes it forgiving for colourwork, cables and structured garments. Alpaca has very little elasticity, which gives it that characteristic flowing drape but means it can grow in length over time, particularly in heavier weights. Blending the two — as many brands do — gives you the best of both: the softness and warmth of alpaca with the structure and resilience of merino.
Pure alpaca is also significantly warmer than wool by weight, making a lightweight alpaca yarn perform like a heavier wool. If you run cold or are knitting for someone who does, alpaca is worth the investment.
What Can You Knit with Alpaca Yarn?
Alpaca yarn is remarkably versatile. Its natural warmth and softness make it ideal for:
- Scarves, wraps and shawls — alpaca drapes beautifully and the halo adds luxurious texture without bulk
- Sweaters and cardigans — especially relaxed, oversized styles that benefit from alpaca's natural drape
- Hats and cowls — soft against the face and ears, with excellent warmth retention
- Baby knits — hypoallergenic alpaca (particularly fine-weight alpaca blends) is gentle enough for delicate skin
- Blankets and throws — lightweight but genuinely warm
For more structured designs with defined stitch definition — such as intricate cables or fitted colourwork — an alpaca/merino blend will hold its shape better than pure alpaca.
Choosing the Right Alpaca Yarn Weight
We stock alpaca yarn across a full range of weights:
Lace and 4-ply alpaca yarn — ideal for delicate shawls, lightweight wraps and accessories. These fine weights show off alpaca's softness and halo at their best. DK alpaca yarn — the most popular weight for garments; versatile enough for everything from summer-weight sweaters to cosy hats. Aran alpaca yarn — great for cushions, heavier cardigans and quick-knit accessories. Chunky alpaca yarn — fast to knit and gloriously warm; perfect for blankets, cowls and winter hats.

Caring for Alpaca Yarn Projects
Alpaca garments are long-lasting when cared for correctly. Most alpaca yarns are best hand washed in cool water with a gentle wool wash, then laid flat to dry. Avoid wringing or hanging, as alpaca's weight when wet can cause it to stretch. Many alpaca blends — particularly those combined with superwash merino — are machine washable on a wool or delicate cycle; always check the individual yarn's ball band.
Because alpaca lacks lanolin, it doesn't felt in the same way as wool — but it can still be damaged by heat and agitation, so cool and gentle is always the rule.
