About Sandnes Garn
Founded in 1888 in the industrial town of Sandnes on Norway's south-west coast, Sandnes Garn is one of the oldest spinning mills in the world still in continuous operation. What began as Sandnes Uldvarefabrik — a red brick mill at the heart of a growing industrial town — has grown into Northern Europe's largest producer of hand knitting yarn, dispatching around 14 million balls of yarn annually to knitters across Scandinavia, Europe, North America and beyond.
The brand's philosophy balances heritage craft with modern values. Sandnes Garn sources fibres with animal welfare and sustainability front of mind, prioritises reduced water use and renewable energy in production, and works to eliminate microplastics from all of its superwash-treated ranges. Their design team travels widely to bring Scandinavian colour sensibility to each new season — producing palettes that are nature-inspired, understated and built to last beyond trends.
Key Yarn Ranges Stocked at The Orry Mill
Sunday is Sandnes Garn's most popular fingering weight yarn — 100% non-superwash merino, mulesing-free, and beloved by designers including PetiteKnit for its exceptional stitch definition. It works beautifully for garments, accessories and baby knitting, and holds double with Tynn Silk Mohair to create a classic Scandinavian fabric.
Double Sunday is the DK weight counterpart — the same 100% merino construction as Sunday but plumper and slightly faster to knit, with the same crisp stitch definition that makes it ideal for cables, textured stitches and colourwork.
Peer Gynt is Sandnes Garn's oldest yarn quality, in continuous production since 1938. Spun from 100% Norwegian wool in a 4-ply construction, it is particularly well suited to traditional kofte sweaters, hardwearing children's garments and anything requiring excellent durability and long-term shape retention. Norwegian wool softens with every wash and is naturally pill-resistant.
Tynn Silk Mohair is a laceweight blend of 57% mohair, 28% silk and 15% wool that adds halo, warmth and drape when held alongside Sunday or any fingering weight yarn. A staple of Scandinavian knitting design for good reason.
Why Knitters Choose Sandnes Garn
Sandnes Garn occupies an unusual position in the yarn world — genuinely old (founded before the telephone was widely available), genuinely modern in its ethics and colour direction, and priced accessibly enough to use for large garment projects without anxiety. The Scandinavian colour palette is distinctive without being difficult to live with; the yarns are consistent dye lot to dye lot; and the range of weights and fibres means one trusted brand can carry a knitter through everything from laceweight shawls to chunky outerwear.
At The Orry Mill, we stock a carefully curated selection of Sandnes Garn's core ranges in-store in Eaglesham, Glasgow, as well as online — so whether you're searching for Sandnes Garn yarn in Scotland or buying online for UK delivery, you'll find the colours and weights you need here.
