Orry Yarn – Darvel Cabled Cowl Knitting Kit

Designed by Tilde Olsen – Orry Yarn

The Darvel Cabled Cowl is worked in the round from the bottom up, in a gentle texture broken by a single repeating C6B cable. There is no shaping and no seaming, so once the round is joined it is the same few rows until you cast off.

That makes it a good first cable and a good first project in the round at the same time. The one step that catches people out is joining without twisting, and the pattern walks you through it.

The kit is knitted in Orry Yarn Merino DK, our own soft, springy, ethically sourced merino. It has the stitch definition a cable needs, and it is forgiving enough to unpick if a cable goes the wrong way.

Skill Level:

Easy (Adventurous beginners) ★★ (2 out of 5)

You should be comfortable casting on and working knit and purl stitches. Joining in the round and cabling are both taught here. Nothing in the pattern is hard to unpick, and a cowl has no fit to get wrong.

Size:

One size, designed to sit comfortably at the neck on an average adult.

The Kit Includes:

You'll Also Need:

  • 3.25mm circular needles, 60cm long, for the ribbing
  • 4mm circular needles, 60cm long, for the body
  • Cable needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Wool needle

A note on the needles:

60cm is the length to buy. The cowl is worked in the round throughout, so there is no point at which straight needles will do, and a shorter 40cm cable will not hold the stitches comfortably.

If you knit with interchangeables, 60cm is the shortest length standard tips will make up, so a pair of 3.25mm tips, a pair of 4mm tips and one 60cm cable will cover the whole project.

Techniques used:

  • Casting on and joining in the round without twisting
  • Knit and purl worked in the round
  • C6B cable, worked with a cable needle
  • Reading a simple stitch repeat and keeping track with a marker
  • Casting off in pattern and weaving in ends

Why You'll Love It:

  • Two new skills in one small project, neither of them punishing
  • No shaping and no seaming, so the knitting is all forward motion
  • A tips and modifications section at the back of the pattern, drawn from years of teaching
  • Designed for the yarn in the box, not substituted into it
  • Pairs with the Darvel Cabled Beanie for a matching set
