Kate Davies – Polkagris Kerchief Knitting Kit

Designed by Kate Davies – KDD & Co

A candy-striped kerchief, named after the Swedish peppermint rock. Two shades, garter stitch throughout, and an elongated triangle that ties comfortably at the neck.

It begins with a handful of stitches at the centre back neck and increases at an even rate across every four-row stripe. There is no colourwork, no shaping to follow and nothing to go wrong, which makes it the simplest kit we stock and a good first project in real wool.

We have kitted this in Jamieson & Smith 2 Ply Jumper Weight, the classic Shetland jumper weight and our choice for this design in place of the yarn named in the pattern. Garter stitch in Shetland wool blooms beautifully when blocked and softens with wear.

Choosing your colours

Fourteen pairings: two grounds, each with seven contrast shades. One ball of each.

  • Light Fawn 202 with Red 1403, Dark Brown 5, Purpley Blue 131, Dark Fuchsia 43, Dark Navy 36, Dark Teal Blue FC41 or Bright Purple Mix FC56
  • Optic White 1 with the same seven contrasts

The ground shade is listed first in each option. Light Fawn is a soft natural beige and Optic White is a clean bright white, so the same contrast reads quite differently against each.

We have matched Kate's colourways as closely as the Jamieson & Smith range allows, and added a good few of our own, so your kerchief will not look identical to the photographs of the original.

Skill Level: Beginner ★★ (2 out of 5)

Size: One size. 100cm / 39½in wide and 30cm / 12in deep. The pattern is written to use up two balls, so knit until the yarn runs out if you would like it bigger.

Gauge: 24 sts x 38 rows to 10cm (4") over garter stitch worked back and forth. Kate's gauge was achieved on 3.25mm needles
