Otley Sweater

Design BF003 · Bramble & Fleece Autumn/Winter Collection

The Otley Sweater is a textured wardrobe essential, featuring an all-over mistake rib pattern and a chunky high neck. Knitted in Bramble & Fleece Wooltrace DK on 5mm needles, it works up quickly at a relaxed gauge and the mistake rib does all the visual work for you.

Mistake rib is the ideal first texture pattern: a two-stitch offset in a straight knit-two, purl-two repeat that produces a deep, springy fabric without any counting. The sweater is worked flat in pieces with a shaped back neck and seamed at the end.

Which yarn does the Otley Sweater use?

Otley is written for Bramble & Fleece Wooltrace DK, a 100% British Romney DK at 225m per 100g hank, traceable to the farm by QR code. Romney is a hardy longwool with real spring in it, which is exactly what a deep mistake rib wants — the texture stands up rather than collapsing. Depending on size you will need 6 to 8 hanks — 600g to 800g in total.

Is it knitted in the round?

No. Otley is worked flat in separate back, front and sleeve pieces, then seamed, with a high neck worked at the end. If you prefer seams and straightforward flat knitting, this is the pattern for you.

This is a digital knitting pattern supplied as a PDF download in English, with UK and US needle sizes and both metric and imperial measurements throughout. Yarn and needles are sold separately.
